by | Aug 7, 2025 | Mango Cultivars

The Sophie Frey mango is a historic cultivar that originated in south Florida, specifically from a seedling of the renowned Julie mango from the West Indies. It was selected by the Zill family in Delray Beach, Florida, and named after Laurence Zill’s grandmother, Sophie Frey. An interesting fact about the Sophie Frey mango is its significant role in mango breeding, as it is the maternal parent of the highly popular ‘Carrie’ mango, making it a foundational variety in the development of other beloved mangoes.
