by | Aug 7, 2025 | Mango Cultivars

The ‘Simmonds’ mango is a cultivar that originated in south Florida, developed by Edward Simmonds in Miami during the 1920s. It is a cross between the ‘Haden’ and ‘Philippine’ mango varieties. Simmonds, a renowned horticulturist and head of the USDA’s Plant Introduction Station in Miami, aimed to create new varieties by hybridizing Indian and Indochinese mango types. An interesting fact about the Simmonds mango is that it was part of a broader effort by Edward Simmonds to combine the best characteristics of different mango lineages, contributing significantly to the diversity of mangoes grown in Florida.
