Mangopedia Personal Experience
In Mangopedia tasting, this Okrung mango measured 23 Brix and weighed about 5.7 oz. The fruit was small, which is the main downside, but that can also be a positive if the tree produces heavily, since smaller mangoes may set in larger numbers on a panicle.
This Okrung was delicious and very sweet. The flesh was exceptionally smooth — more of a jelly-smooth texture than a buttery or creamy one — with a syrupy honey sweetness. It had a Thai mango flavor with added complexity and the same kind of Thai floral note associated with this flavor class.
Captain received this variety from Julian at Lara Farms in Miami and grafted it onto his oldest mango tree. The grafted branches have grown very vigorously and are doing very well. Because they are taking up a lot of space on the tree, Captain plans to prune them back so there is room for other varieties besides Okrung.
From what was observed, the tree appears small to compact, vigorous, and very disease resistant. The skin on this fruit was thin and may be edible; there were no obvious off flavors from the skin in this sample. Overall, Okrung is a very delicious mango, with the small fruit size being the main drawback.
