Mekong

by | Aug 5, 2025 | Mango Cultivars

In the experimental orchards of West Palm Beach, Florida, where innovation meets tradition, a remarkable cross-cultural fruit story began to unfold. The Mekong mango represents one of the most successful attempts to bridge the gap between two distinct mango lineages—the classic Edward variety and the exotic Philippine mango—creating something entirely new yet deeply rooted in mango heritage.

The mastermind behind this creation was David Sturrock, whose breeding program in the 1960s sought to combine the best characteristics of different mango varieties. When he crossed the reliable Edward with a Philippine variety, the result was so striking in appearance that it reminded him of the wild Mangifera Mekongensis species. Though the new hybrid bore no genetic relation to that wild species, the resemblance was uncanny enough to inspire its name—Mekong.

What makes Mekong truly special is its unique flavor profile that seems to tell the story of its diverse parentage. Each bite delivers what enthusiasts describe as “a Thai mango with an Indian resinous component”—a complex taste that bridges Southeast Asian sweetness with the deeper, more complex notes of Indian varieties. The flesh is firm yet completely fiberless, with a beautiful orange color that hints at the tropical sunset.

Perhaps most remarkably, Mekong possesses an almost magical quality of maintaining its perfect eating condition. Unlike many mangoes that quickly become overripe and mushy, Mekong can sit for several days after reaching perfect ripeness without losing its firm texture or developing that unpleasant soft spot. The skin becomes edible when ripe, adding another layer of convenience to this already exceptional fruit.

Today, the original Mekong tree stands tall in Florida, having grown into a magnificent specimen that requires ladders to harvest its precious fruit. Its kidney-shaped, yellow fruits have earned A+ ratings from mango connoisseurs, yet remain one of the best-kept secrets in the mango world due to their limited availability. Each Mekong mango carries within it the story of successful hybridization, the vision of a dedicated breeder, and the promise that sometimes the most extraordinary fruits come from the most unexpected combinations.
