Adventures in Thai Mango Grafting: Transforming My Seedling Otis Tree

As a dedicated mango enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share my latest grafting project that combines preservation with innovation. My beloved Otis mango tree, grown from seed, has been a consistent heavy producer over the years. Recently, I made the exciting decision to transform it into a multi-variety specimen by grafting several exceptional Thai mango varieties.

The Grafting Journey

The star of this grafting project is the Krom Phai mango, one of Thailand’s finest varieties and a personal favorite. After careful preparation and grafting work, I’m delighted to report that all grafts appear to have taken successfully. This promising start has me eagerly anticipating the future harvests of these exceptional fruits.

Why Okrung Mango?

What makes the Okrung mango truly special is its unique characteristics:

  • An unusual green flesh that remains green even at peak ripeness
  • Contrasts with traditional mango varieties that typically display yellow, orange, or golden flesh
  • Exceptional flavor profile that ranks it among the finest Thai mangoes
  • A testament to the incredible diversity within the mango family

Future Grafting Plans

This project is just the beginning of my tree’s transformation. I’m already planning to expand my collection by grafting additional varieties, including the Ambrosia Friday mango – my standout favorite variety discovery of 2024. This variety has completely won me over with its exceptional qualities.

Looking Forward

As this grafting project develops, I’ll be documenting the growth progress, successful takes, and eventually, the first fruits. For fellow mango enthusiasts interested in grafting, this journey will provide valuable insights into creating your own multi-variety mango tree.

Stay tuned for regular updates on this exciting transformation. Whether you’re a seasoned grafter or just starting your mango growing journey, I hope my experiences can help guide your own tropical fruit adventures.
