A fresh report from Himachal Pradesh has put a spotlight on a mango story that is easy to miss during export and festival season: Kangra’s old seed-grown desi aam trees are disappearing, and with them may go flavors, aromas, and genetics that cannot be recreated from a nursery catalog.

The Tribune reported on July 28 that orchardists, environmentalists, and nature lovers in Kangra are calling for urgent preservation of the district’s indigenous mango heritage. The report describes a fading village tradition built around naturally ripened local mangoes, while warning that century-old trees are being cut for timber, construction, and higher-return commercial plantings.

Why Kangra’s local mango trees matter

Kangra’s lower subtropical belt—areas such as Indora, Nurpur, Pragpur, Dehra, Nagrota Surian, Jawali, and Shahpur—has long been associated with mango growing. According to The Tribune, mango occupies roughly 22,000 hectares in the district, more than half of its fruit-cultivation area. Commercial cultivars such as Dasheri mango and Langra mango are part of that landscape, but the most vulnerable material is often the least formally named: seedling mango trees planted or allowed to grow around homes, fields, and village commons.

That distinction matters. Grafted mango orchards are designed to reproduce a known variety. Seed-grown local trees are different. Once an old seedling tree is cut, its exact combination of traits is usually gone unless someone has already propagated it, documented it, or conserved living material.

For backyard growers and serious collectors outside India, Kangra’s warning is a reminder not to evaluate mango value only by commercial fame. The world’s named mango varieties did not appear from nowhere. Many began as seedlings that someone noticed, tasted, selected, named, and preserved. Today’s obscure village tree can become tomorrow’s breeding parent, regional specialty, or locally adapted cultivar.

The same lesson applies in Florida, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and home collections anywhere mangoes are grown from seed. A seedling may be mediocre, but it may also carry a distinctive flavor profile, unusual season, compact habit, disease tolerance, or cold response. If every planting decision favors only a narrow set of market cultivars, the total genetic library becomes thinner.

A practical preservation model

A practical Kangra preservation effort would not need to reject commercial orchards. Growers still need varieties that pay. The opportunity is to pair commercial production with a living heritage map: identify outstanding seed-grown trees, name them locally, graft them into community collections, and create small tasting events that make younger consumers excited about local mango diversity again.

That kind of effort could also support rural tourism and premium direct sales. A tray of anonymous mixed mangoes is hard to market. A documented collection of Kangra heritage mangoes—with stories, harvest dates, tasting notes, and local names—has much more value for visitors, chefs, nurseries, and fruit enthusiasts.
