Jalisco has announced a new mango-health plan aimed at one of the industry’s most persistent export barriers: fruit fly pressure. The 2026–2028 program, led by SADER Jalisco and the state’s food health and safety agency ASICA, will begin with a pilot in Tomatlán, the state’s leading mango-producing municipality.

According to ASICA’s July 22 announcement, the plan is designed to reduce the presence of fruit flies, improve orchard productivity, and expand commercial opportunities for Jalisco mangoes in domestic and international markets. Tomatlán pilot will cover 1,500 hectares

The first phase will start in Tomatlán with a pilot covering 1,500 hectares, or roughly 3,700 acres. ASICA says the pilot will include more than 650,000 pesos in investment for bait stations targeting fruit fly control. The agency also plans to reinforce phytosanitary surveillance with specialized technical staff and drone-supported precision treatments.

The timeline is ambitious but clear. Jalisco wants to identify orchards that are temporarily free of fruit fly during 2027, then move toward official recognition as an area of low prevalence by 2028. After that, the state plans to pursue a pest-free area designation. If those steps are achieved, they could strengthen Jalisco’s position in the Mexican mango trade and give exporters a more persuasive story when approaching premium buyers.

Jalisco’s mango industry is large, but still has room to move up

Jalisco currently ranks sixth among Mexican states for mango production, according to the state announcement. ASICA reported around 128,000 tons of annual production from about 8,500 hectares. Production is concentrated in 19 municipalities in the Costa Sur region, with Tomatlán producing 81,631 tons, followed by La Huerta and Cihuatlán.

Mexico is already one of the most important mango suppliers for North American buyers. For U.S. consumers, Mexican fruit often defines the supermarket mango season, including familiar commercial types such as Ataulfo mangoes, Haden, Kent, Keitt, and Tommy Atkins. Jalisco’s program is not a new-variety story, but it could affect how confidently fruit from the region moves through export channels in future seasons.

A broader orchard-health strategy, not just traps

The plan is notable because it is not being presented as a single pest-control tactic. ASICA says the work is being coordinated with the Mango Exporters Association of Mexico, local plant health boards, and SADER Jalisco. In addition to fruit fly reduction, the program includes productivity support, crop nutrition, flowering management, grower organization, and continuing technical assistance.

That broader scope matters. Fruit fly control is easier to talk about than to execute because pest pressure is tied to orchard hygiene, unmanaged host fruit, weather, timing, and the coordination of many growers in the same zone. A single clean orchard can still be affected by unmanaged fruit nearby. Regional programs therefore depend on shared monitoring, prompt response, accurate record keeping, and growers trusting the system enough to participate.

What growers and mango collectors should take from the news

For commercial growers, the Jalisco plan highlights a familiar reality: market access increasingly depends on documented production systems, not just harvest volume. A region that can show lower pest prevalence, stronger surveillance, and coordinated response capacity has a better chance of protecting export options when importing countries tighten scrutiny.

For backyard growers and mango collectors, the lesson is more practical. Fruit fly pressure and other pest issues rarely improve by neglect. Fallen fruit, late cleanup, and unmanaged alternate hosts can turn a small planting into a pest reservoir. Even home orchards benefit from regular scouting, sanitation, and early intervention before problems become region-wide.

For buyers, the story helps explain why two mangoes that look similar on a display table may represent very different supply chains. Behind a clean export mango are orchard inspections, pest monitoring, treatment protocols, packing standards, and paperwork. If Jalisco’s pilot succeeds, it could make the state a stronger and more reliable participant in export markets while also encouraging other mango regions to invest in proactive plant-health systems.
