India’s mango export story is increasingly being shaped after harvest, not just in the orchard. A new update from the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR-IIHR), Bengaluru, says researchers have developed and validated a shorter hot water treatment protocol for commercial mango cultivars that can help control both fruit fly and anthracnose while avoiding the internal breakdown problems seen in some fruit under older treatment schedules.
For growers, collectors, exporters, and serious mango buyers, this is more than a technical packhouse note. Postharvest treatment is one of the key bottlenecks between a good mango crop and a fruit that can travel safely, satisfy quarantine expectations, and still arrive with the flavor and texture buyers expect. The update is especially relevant for South Indian mangoes such as Alphonso mango and Banganapalle mango, both of which are important in export and premium domestic channels.
What ICAR-IIHR says changed in mango hot water treatment
According to ICAR-IIHR, earlier postharvest guidance involved separate hot water treatments: one aimed at fruit fly control at 48°C for 60 minutes and another aimed at anthracnose at 52°C for 5–10 minutes. The institute says the 48°C, 60-minute treatment for fruit fly control was observed to cause severe internal breakdown, described as spongy-tissue-like damage, in Alphonso.
The newly standardized protocol is different: mature green mangoes are subjected to 55°C hot water for 20 minutes, then dipped in 5% salt water for 30 minutes. ICAR-IIHR reports that the shorter treatment did not cause internal breakdown while effectively controlling fruit fly infestation and anthracnose disease. The institute says scale-up trials were carried out with Alphonso, Banganapalli, and IIHR hybrids Arka Uday and Arka Suprabhat.
Why fruit fly and anthracnose control matter
Fruit fly risk can stop mangoes at the border. Anthracnose, meanwhile, can turn apparently sound fruit into spotted, rotting fruit after harvest, especially when mangoes are shipped into humid conditions or held too long in the supply chain. Both problems are familiar to commercial growers, backyard collectors, and anyone who has watched a promising fruit develop black lesions after ripening indoors.
The practical challenge is that postharvest treatments must be strong enough to manage pests and disease, but gentle enough to protect eating quality. A treatment that controls fruit fly but causes internal breakdown is a bad trade for premium varieties. A treatment that protects appearance but does not meet market or quarantine expectations is equally limiting. That is why ICAR-IIHR’s claim of a single, shorter treatment for both problems is worth watching.
A Brunei shipment gives the protocol an early commercial test
ICAR-IIHR says it facilitated exporter Haseena Roshan of Millet Smile, Yelahanka, for a shipment of 1.2 tons of Banganapalli mangoes using the treatment protocol. The shipment moved by air cargo from Chennai airport to Brunei on June 25, 2026. According to the institute, the buyer confirmed that the mangoes arrived in good condition, free from fruit fly and anthracnose, with satisfactory quality and overall appearance.
That is still an early example, not proof that every variety, orchard, maturity stage, and shipping route will respond the same way. But it is a useful signal because export mangoes are judged not only by laboratory results but by whether fruit arrives clean, marketable, and enjoyable to eat. If the protocol continues to hold up, it could be especially useful for shorter regional export lanes and premium consignments where texture defects are unacceptable.
Approval status and where the protocol may fit first
ICAR-IIHR notes that exporters could reduce quarantine hot water treatment time by one third once the protocol is approved by India’s quarantine authority, the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine and Storage. Until that approval is in place for quarantine use, the institute says the treatment can still be used for fruit being sent to distant domestic markets or to countries where quarantine hot water treatment is not required.
That distinction matters. Growers should not read the announcement as an immediate replacement for every export-market protocol. Importing countries can have their own phytosanitary rules, and packhouses must follow the specific requirements for each destination. The near-term value may be in reducing postharvest losses, improving disease control, and building confidence among exporters who handle sensitive cultivars.
Part of a larger push to make Indian mangoes travel better
This announcement also fits a broader pattern in India’s mango sector: more attention to protocols, packhouse handling, and logistics. In a separate recent update, ICAR-CISH and APEDA described a sea-route export protocol used for a 12.5-tonne consignment of Dashehari and Langra mangoes from Uttar Pradesh to Dubai. That story focused on sea freight, shelf-life handling, and packhouse practices rather than hot water treatment, but the theme is similar: mango export growth depends on repeatable postharvest systems.

A mature green export fruit is not the same as a tree-ripe backyard mango, and treatment results may vary.
Still, the direction is encouraging. If South Indian mango exporters can control fruit fly and anthracnose with a shorter single treatment while protecting eating quality, it could mean fewer postharvest losses, more stable buyer confidence, and better access for premium Indian mangoes in regional markets. For varieties with strong reputations but fragile handling profiles, that is exactly the kind of behind-the-scenes improvement that can expand demand.
