Gary Mango: A Florida Breeding Legacy

Introduction

The Gary mango is a notable cultivar from South Florida, esteemed for its exceptional flavor profile and its role in the development of several modern mango varieties.

Origins and Development

The Gary mango originated in the 1970s as a seedling of the ‘Carrie’ mango, with its pollen parent believed to be the ‘Pettigrew’ cultivar. It was selected by the Zill family of Boynton Beach, Florida, and named after horticulturist and nursery owner Gary Zill, who has been instrumental in developing numerous superior mango varieties.

Unique Characteristics

  • Fruit Appearance: The Gary mango produces small, ovoid-shaped fruits, typically weighing less than a pound. The skin turns yellow upon ripening, though when grown inland, it may remain green.
  • Seed Type: It contains a polyembryonic seed, which can produce multiple seedlings from a single seed, often true to the parent plant.

Growth Regions and Tree Characteristics

  • Tree Size and Habit: The Gary mango tree is moderately vigorous with a dense canopy. It can be maintained at a height between 8 to 15 feet with annual pruning, making it suitable for smaller spaces. However, due to its natural vigor and spreading limbs, it is not ideal for long-term container growth and is not considered a “condo” mango.
  • Disease Resistance: While the Gary mango is quite resistant to bacterial black spot, it is highly susceptible to fungal issues such as anthracnose and powdery mildew, particularly in humid environments.
  • Production and Seasonality: The tree’s fruit production ranges from fair to average. It is a mid-season variety in South Florida, typically ripening in July. The flowers and young fruit are prone to fungal infections, which can affect yield.

Flavor Profile

The Gary mango is celebrated for its distinctive coconut and citrus flavor combination, often described as reminiscent of a PiƱa Colada. The flesh is soft, fiberless, and exceptionally sweet, providing a delightful eating experience.

Cultural Significance

Beyond its own appeal, the Gary mango has played a significant role in mango breeding programs. It is believed to be the pollen parent of several notable hybrids developed by Gary Zill, including:

  • ‘Coconut Cream’
  • ‘Pineapple Pleasure’
  • ‘Pina Colada’
  • ‘Seacrest’
  • ‘Orange Essence’
  • ‘Honey Kiss’
  • ‘Cotton Candy’
  • ‘M-4’

Additional Information

Due to its susceptibility to fungal diseases, the Gary mango is best suited for cultivation in areas with lower humidity or by growers willing to implement rigorous disease management practices. Its unique flavor and compact growth habit make it a desirable choice for enthusiasts and collectors.
