The Diamond mango, originally known as HW-14, represents a unique departure from traditional mango varieties, offering distinctive characteristics that set it apart in the world of tropical fruits.

Development History

Emerging from Gary Zill’s Florida breeding program, this cultivar traces its lineage to the ‘Julie’ mango, with ‘Nam Doc Mai’ suspected as the pollen parent. Its journey to recognition involved Richard Campbell of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, who recognized its potential and bestowed its original name “Fairchild Diamond,” later simplified to “Diamond.”

Physical Characteristics

Diamond mangoes present a distinctive oblong shape, averaging about one pound in weight. Unlike many mangoes, they maintain a predominantly green skin even at ripeness, with only subtle yellow undertones developing. The flesh exhibits firmness and contains some fiber, diverging from the fiberless texture common in dessert varieties.

Growth Pattern

One of the cultivar’s most celebrated features is its compact growth habit. Trees maintain a dwarf stature, typically reaching only 10 to 15 feet in height. This controlled size, combined with a dense canopy, has earned it the nickname “condo mango,” making it ideal for container growing and urban gardens.
